Flexible coding course for beginners

If you are new to coding and you want to get an overview of web development, this is the right course for you.

You will learn how to build responsive websites with HTML, CSS and JavaScript and will learn about the terminal, GitHub, Visual Studio Code and Netlify.

Learning by doing

Every third week you will get a bundle with course material including video lectures, readings and a project brief and practices.

Community Support

The course is based online so that you can follow whenever you have time and get in touch anytime through our slack channel.

If you want you can meet up with the community at Stripped Pizza each Saturday, 12th September – 28th November 2020, from 09:00 until 11:30. During these meetings you get can discuss your questions if you prefer to do that in person.

What you will learn
  • How to structure content on webpages using HTML
  • How to style webpages using CSS
  • How to build responsive webpages for mobile, tablet and desktop
  • How to add forms to your webpages and what a request is
  • The basics of how to make your webpages interactive using JavaScript
  • Development tools such as Github, VS Code, Netlify, the terminal and more

Detailed Course Content

First Project

Your own portfolio

To start off your new programming hobby you need a portfolio to gather all your projects in. Let’s build one together.

Learnings

  • How to structure webpages with HTML
  • How to style webpages using CSS
  • How to use Github and VS Code
  • How to publish your website

Second Project

Newspaper for mobile, tablet and desktop

Your second project will be to build something that most of us use everyday – a newspaper! The best thing is that it will work great for both mobile, tablet and desktop.

Learnings

  • Understanding of the box model
  • How to make layouts using Flexbox
  • Responsive design using media queries
  • How to use Chrome dev tools

Third Project

Company webpage with signup form

It’s time to flex our code muscles and build a classic single-page site with a signup form. The page will also be responsive and work well for mobile and tablet.

Learnings

  • How the internet works
  • How to use HTML forms and simple requests
  • What JavaScript is and what it’s used for
  • How to modify the DOM using JavaScript

Last Project

Food ordering bot

Lastly we’ll train our new JavaScript skills by building a small bot which will help you order food. We’ll practice the basics of JavaScript and also explore a bit more how the internet works.

  • Basic functions in JavaScript
  • How to use conditionals in JavaScript

Frequently Asked Questions

The course is based online so that you can learn whenever and wherever it suits you. You get support in our slack community.
The course is based on an online platform which contains all the information you need to learn the basics about websites. Besides that there is a slack community for you to ask questions whenever. There is no online live-stream available.
Turn to our community on Slack for help if you need help while not being on-site. There’s also a FAQ added to each project with the most asked questions. Otherwise you can always ask the experienced coaches.
You will be able to build basic responsive websites using primarily HTML and CSS. You will master the most commonly used tools by developers and you will know some JavaScript to keep experimenting with after the course. You will also have a portfolio to show to possible employers or further programming schools.
Once you buy the course, you can access the course material for one year after the course started. However, if you want to follow the Code Excursion meet-ups we highly recommend you to follow the course and your classmates.
All material except for the meet-ups is online and in a selfstudy format. You can plan your study time however you like, but we recommend that you keep to the triweekly schedule to get most out of the meetups.
The online platform is in English and the coaches also speak English. But most of us are Swiss German 🙂
